One of the longest winning streaks in Nevada history hit triple figures on Thursday night in Winnemucca, as the Lowry High School wrestling team won its 100th consecutive dual with 76-0 and 57-12 wins over South Tahoe and Douglas, respectively.
The Buckaroos, who have won the last six straight Division I-A state championships, will have an opportunity to break the state record of 107 when they host the Division I-A duals at the end of January. Yerington currently holds the record, which lasted from 1971-79. The next closest streak is Chaparral's 51 from 1974-78.
"That is a pretty incredible number if you think about it," said LHS coach John Brooks. "We have had some pretty good kids go through this program, now going on seven years. You have to give them credit, they work hard. I just want to thank South Tahoe and Douglas for coming down a day early. It's almost impossible for us to get a home dual anymore."
Lowry opened with South Tahoe and jumped out to a 24-0 lead as Zach Peters (106 pounds), Brian Day (113), Trase Bell (120) and Quint Bell (126) won by forfeit.
The closest battle of the dual came at 132 pounds when Kevin Blanco defeated Michael Valney 6-4 in overtime. Blanco was able to get a take down in the extra period. Gabe Molina followed with a 6-1 victory over James Sorenson at 138 pounds.
Nate Nelson (145), Blake Duncan (152) and Shaun Mentaberry (160) added victories to make the score 48-0. Tristen Waller pinned Michael Herring at 170 pounds and Beau Billingsley (182) beat Andrew Herrera 17-3. The dual ended with Anthony Hummel (195), Blake Hillyer (220) and Luis Cardenas winning by forfeit,
Against Douglas, Day gave Lowry an early 6-0 lead, as the Buckaroos won the next three matches by decision.Trase Bell beat Ryan Adams 10-2, Quint Bell knocked off Andrew Williams 6-2 and Blanco shut out Michael Neff for an 18-0 lead after the 132-pound weight class.
Molina, Nelson and Duncan won the next three matches by pin, when Mentaberry and Waller pulled out victories by decision to put the Buckaroos up 42-0.
Billingsley quickly pinned Joshua Jensen at 182 pounds and Hummel beat Ryland DeSomber 3-1. Lowry's last victory was a first-period pin by Cardenas over Ian Pieller.
"I wasn't sure what to expect from Douglas," Brooks said. "You see that they have a full team, but they are young. We got some nice wins from our freshmen and I am liking what I see from them. I expect the older guys to be what they are doing."
Lowry travels to Reno this weekend for the Reno Tournament of Champions. It is one of the toughest tournaments in America
