Billy DeLong earns all-around cowboy honors, wins two state titles on home turf in Winnemucca

The Humboldt County Rodeo Club took home a couple state championships, as the club hosted the Nevada State Finals Rodeo in Winnemucca from May 25-29 at the Winnemucca Event Center.

Billy DeLong ran away with the all-around cowboy honors for the year and was the state champion in saddle bronc, steer wrestling, the reserve champion in boys cutting and was fourth in steer wrestling.

He will take part in the National High School Finals Rodeo in all those events from July 16-22 in Gillette, Wyo.,   

DeLong won all three performances of saddle bronc at the state finals with 54, 62 and 72 points, respectively. He was the only cowboy with three successful rides. 

DeLong is headed to Wyoming in steer wrestling as well as the state champion. 

He was the runner-up in the first performance at state with a time of 9.48 seconds. He won the second performance with a time of 4.85 and claimed the short go as well at 12.38 for an average of 26.710. He was the only cowboy with three times on the weekend. 

DeLong placed second in the season-long boys cutting standings, as Fernley’s Kade McKnight was the state champion. DeLong won all three performances with scores of 149, 150 and 147.

DeLong claimed the final state spot in tie-down roping, placing fourth in the season standings. Delong was in the top 10 in each performance with times of 16.370, 19.310 and 13.620. 

Brynn Barto started the state finals as the leader in barrel racing and did not give that spot up at the state finals to win the state title in barrel racing. 

She won the first performance with a time of 15.860 and improved her time in the second performance to win at 15.468.

Barto finished second in the short go at 15.753, just off the time of Elko’s Syerra Silva at 15.574.  

Barto was 16th in breakaway roping and 16th in pole bending and qualified for the Silver State International Rodeo in Winnemucca. Barto placed 17th in goat tying  

Natalie Mori qualified for the national finals in Wyoming, following a second-place finish in reined cow horse. 

Mori had a third-place finish in the first performance with 282.5 points, was second in the second performance at 286 and she won the short go-around with 286.5 points. Mori qualified for the Silver State International rodeo in barrel racing and girls cutting.

Matti DeLong was crowned as the Nevada State Rookie of the Year and qualified for the national finals in girls cutting with a fourth-place average. DeLong had scores of 136. 139 and 141,

DeLong qualified for the Silver State International Rodeo in barrel racing, where she was fifth in the season-long average standings. 

DeLong jumped six spots at state with times of 16.076, 15.524 and 16.001. She was sixth in breakaway roping, including winning the short go at the state finals. 

She was 10th in goat tying and 12th in pole bending.

Ashley Rookstool is headed back to the national finals girls cutting, as she tied DeLong for fourth place. 

Rookstool kicked off her weekend by winning the first performance with 148 points. She won the second performance with 149 points and made it a clean sweep in the short go-around with 147 points. She jumped from seventh to second to qualify for the national finals.

Kayleigh Marshall is headed to Wyoming as the Nevada State High School Rodeo queen..
