County to store Christmas Alert items

On Thursday, Dec 14, The Lander County Commission approved letting the old Sheriff’s Department store Christmas Alert items year round. Christmas Alert has helped 92 families in need this holiday season.

Kathy Ancho, of the Sheriff’s Office, approached Lander County Commissioners with Brenda Thomas of the Frontier Community Action Agency. The ladies spoke on the success of Christmas Alert program this season.

“We have received a ton of donations for Christmas Alert, including trees and decorations,” explained Ancho, “We were wondering if we can store them year-round in the extra rooms at the old Sheriff’s Office and Fire Hall. I know there are extra rooms in there and it will give us space, so we can wrap the presents and we don’t have to ask people if we can come in and wrap the presents. We can just set up our tables and wrap when we need to. The community has been absolutely wonderful and has stepped up in helping out.”

There will not be any extra expense for the county to store Christmas Alert donations, outside of providing the space for the contributions. This year’s Christmas Alert has helped over 90 families in the community. Donations have exceeded the current storage location and needed to be moved to a larger secure area. The old Sheriff’s Office seemed like the perfect fit to Ancho and Thomas.

The Lander County Commission voted unanimously to approve the storage of Christmas Alert donations year round in the old Sheriff’s Office and Fire Hall. Ancho and Thomas will now have access to the donations whenever they need to access them.
