Voter registration deadline is Oct. 16

Early voting starts Oct. 20, ends Nov. 2

LOVELOCK - Pershing County residents planning to vote in the Nov. 6 General Election have until Tuesday, Oct. 16, to register in person at the county clerk-treasurer's office located inside the county administration building in Lovelock.

"In order to register to vote, you'll sign an oath saying who you are and that you live here. You'll need a driver's license or Social Security number," said Rachel Craspay, Pershing County deputy clerk-treasurer. "Right now, that's the only way you can register from now until Oct. 16."

The deadline for mail-in or online voter registration was October 6, she said.

Early voting starts on Saturday, Oct. 20, and ends Friday, Nov. 2, at the clerk-treasurer's office, she said. The office will be open to voters from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. The office is closed on Sundays. On Saturday, Oct. 27, early voting will also be conducted at the Grass Valley Community Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Registered voters in Imlay, precinct 5, and Rye Patch, precinct 7, should be receiving mail-in ballots from the county, Craspay said.

"We'll mail those (mail-in ballots) probably the week before early voting starts," she said.

On Election Day, polling places will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Pershing County Community Center in Lovelock and at the Grass Valley Community Center. Voters should bring photo identification just in case there's a question on the validity of their voter registration, Craspay said.

"You would need photo identification only if it's required. If we had a mismatch on the DMV website when we put in your voter registration, or your signature doesn't look right or something like that, then we would ask for (photo) identification."

Pershing County voting machines produce both electronic and paper records of each ballot cast. Voters can view the paper record but do not receive a copy of their completed ballot. Paper ballots remain with the county in case a recount is needed after the election.

"On the machines, it looks like a receipt and when you're voting it prints that out. You can look at that (paper record) through a glass window to make sure that it matches," Craspay said. "You don't get to take that with you - we keep those."

Sample ballots will be mailed to Pershing County's registered voters next week before early voting, she said.

As of Monday, there were a total of 2,226 active registered voters in Pershing County, according to the county's website. Of those voters, there are 664 Democrats, 1,080 Republicans, 378 Nonpartisans, 14 Libertarians, 85 Independent Americans, one Natural Law and four Other.
