WINNEMUCCA -The Humboldt Volunteer Hospice bet on the Winnemucca Mule Show and Races earlier this month - and they got a great return.

The Winnemucca Mule Show and Races took place Friday through Sunday, May 31 through June 2, at the Winnemucca Events Complex, and volunteers from the Humboldt Volunteer Hospice once again agreed to man the pari-mutuel betting windows on Saturday and Sunday.

"That was just a great thing for us," said HVH Executive Director Sherry Smith, "because we were rewarded with some great funding for our organization."

Smith said the volunteer organization will receive a donation from the Agricultural District No. 3, which produces the annual event, and tips from the betting windows.

"It was awesome!" she said. "People are very kind."

Plus, Smith said a small host of volunteers responded to the group's calls for help to man the windows. "We really appreciate them as well."

The weekend event sees some of the world's most famous racing mules make the trip to north-central Nevada before they kick off a five-month racing odyssey that includes the country's most famous quarterhorse tracks, including Del Mar, Pomona and Los Alamitos.

Smith said, "This was a fun event with a great following and a great history and we were really happy to be able to help."

The Humboldt Volunteer Hospice provides help to individuals in the Humboldt County community who are suffering from a chronic, debilitating or terminal illness.

All hospice care is provided at no cost to patients and families do not need a doctor's referral in order to access hospice services.
