'Basque Herders: The End of an Era' at the California Trail Center

ELKO - On Saturday, June 29, at 2 p.m. a free presentation on the story of the Basques in the Great Basin is being offered by Kent McAdoo of the University of Nevada, Reno Extension Service.

McAdoo will discuss the influences of the Basque on Elko's culture and landscape.

In 1970, 90 percent of the sheep herders in the Great Basin were of Basque heritage, yet by 1976 only 14 percent of the sheep herders were of Basque descent.

In "Basque Herders - the End of an Era," McAdoo will explain the marks they left on the landscape, and why their numbers in the sheep ranching industry declined so steeply in the last 40 years.

The California Trail Interpretive Center, operated by the Bureau of Land Management, is located eight miles west of Elko at Hunter Exit 292. The center is open Wednesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Contact the trail center at (775) 738-1849 for more information.
